The Trenino Rosso, so called on account of the flame-red colour of its carriages, is a jewel belonging to the Ferrovia Retica [Rhaetian Railway], and since 2008 has been a Unesco World Heritage Site. Along a breathtaking route, the highest train in Europe, known also as the Bernina Express, scales the Alps without the use of toothed rack rails. Setting out from Tirano and immediately passing alongside the majestic Basilica of the Madonna di Tirano, considered one of the three most beautiful churches in Lombardy, after a few kilometres the Trenino del Bernina reaches one of the most charming points of the journey, the marvellous helical viaduct of Brusio. After passing Lake Poschiavo and the town of the same name with its typical patrician houses and historical palazzos, you continue up to the panoramic point of Alp Grüm, at 2,091 m and with breathtaking views of the Valposchiavo.

From there, immersed in the silence and enchantment of the landscape, the Trenino Rosso begins the descent towards the 1,775 m altitude of St. Moritz, the destination of this unbelievable journey. The Trenino Rosso travels throughout the year and has comfortable modern panoramic carriages that allow you to appreciate the landscape all around with 360° views in both winter and summer. In every season of the year, the landscapes along the Trenino Rosso’s route offer unique colours and panoramas. In winter it is certainly very enchanting to travel through completely snowy landscapes, just as in the longer days of spring the blossoming flowers and even the sporadic snowfalls offer entirely new landscapes to discover. In summer it is possible to travel in the open convertible carriages that allow you to “breathe in” the Alps and also see some wild animals. Finally, the autumn, with its bright colours, ranging from red, through orange, to yellow, offers landscapes that seem to be painted and leave you open mouthed. Winter, spring, summer and autumn, an emotion for every season!
